CHIROPRACTIC

What is Chiropractic?

Chiropractic is a hands-on therapy directed to the diagnosis, treatment and management of conditions which are attributable to the mechanical dysfunction of joints, bones and muscles (particularly the spine) and their impact on the nervous system. The chiropractor uses his or her hands to work on the joints of the body, making gentle adjustments (manipulations) to improve the efficiency of the nervous system and liberate the body's natural healing ability. No drugs or surgery is involved. All chiropractors are registered under the Chiropractors Act 1994 and the title 'chiropractor' is reserved for those duly qualified and registered under this legislation. The profession is regulated by the General Chiropractic Council.

What conditions can be treated by Chiropractic?

Conditions suitable for Chiropractic treatment include:

  • back and neck pain
  • knee ligament sprains and mild meniscal tears
  • tension headaches due to muscle spasm/upper cervical spine dysfunction
  • Peripheral joint problems (e.g. tendonitis, carpal tunnel syndrome, shoulder capsulitis) which may involve the cervical spine despite presenting as local problems
  • Ankle injuries & dysfunctions of the hands and feet

What is a Chiropractic treatment like?

The Initial Consultation will involve taking a detailed case history and during the Initial Consultation a Treatment Plan may be suggested and the likely timescale and cost indicated. Tests of various kinds may be conducted to assess the nature and extent of mechanical dysfunction. Thereafter treatment will consist of a variety of manipulative techniques designed to improve the function of joints and relieve pain and tension. In comparison with osteopaths and physiotherapists, chiropractors use more manipulation of joints and less soft tissue massage. The treatment may be carried out whilst the patient is lying on a treatment couch, sitting in a treatment chair or standing (as appropriate) and it may be necessary to partially undress or loosen clothing.
