KINESIOLOGY

What is Kinesiology?

The Greek word 'kinesis' (movement) is the root of 'Kinesiology' which is the study of the body's muscles and movement. Applied Kinesiology - that is, the systematic application of muscle testing for diagnostic and therapeutic purposes - was defined and named in 1964 by an American chiropractor, Dr. George Goodheart, and draws on a number of disciplines including chiropractic, acupuncture and osteopathy. Kinesiology is a holistic therapy (that is, it seeks to achieve overall patient wellbeing - physical, mental, emotional and spiritual - rather than just the relief of specific symptoms) which seeks to identify and treat energy imbalances and blockages.

What conditions can be treated by Kinesiology?

Kinesiology can bring particular relief in cases of everyday complaints where orthodox medicine struggles - the assessment techniques can be effective in identifying the underlying causes of conditions such as general fatigue and unwellness and so pointing to the restorative actions that will be helpful. Kinesiology can help with many common ailments such as allergies, chronic tiredness, asthma, eczema, candida albicans, insomnia, headaches, phobias, mild depression, weight problems, muscular and skeletal pain, hyperactivity (and many more).

What is a Kinesiology treatment like?

The Initial Consultation will involve taking a detailed case history and during the Initial Consultation a Treatment Plan will be suggested and the likely timescale and cost indicated.

Most muscle tests are conducted with the patient lying on a treatment couch or, if unable to do so, sitting in a treatment chair. There is no need to undress but it is more comfortable to be loosely dressed (some of the tests involve raising limbs) so you may be asked to remove watches, spectacles, contact lenses, shoes, belts - anything which may be constricting or interfere with the energy flows. The Kinesiologist will ask the patient to move their arm or leg into a particular position and ask them to resist pressure on the limb for a brief period. Correction techniques (where imbalances are detected) are painless and include e.g. pressing or massaging acupuncture points. Advice for management of the condition may be given covering e.g. nutrition, exercise and stress reduction techniques.
