REIKI

What is Reiki?

Reiki loosely translates from the Japanese as 'universal life-force energy' and is the name given to a system of healing based on the channelling of energy for therapeutic ends which evolved in Japan in the early Twentieth Century from the practice developed by Dr. Mikao Usui following many years of study, research and meditation. Before he died in 1926 Dr. Usui inducted a number of students into the Reiki system (or, in the Reiki idiom, 'attuned' them) and in course of time those whom he attuned went on to attune others. Many years later in the latter quarter of the century Reiki began to be known of outside Japan and gradually a Western tradition of Reiki was established though all who are attuned to Reiki can trace their lineage back to Dr. Usui. Reiki attunements are given at three levels - First Degree, Second Degree (Practitioner Level) and Master level. Reiki Masters are able to teach and attune students to Reiki.

The underlying premise of Reiki is that energy (i.e Reiki) invoked by the practitioner is channelled through the practitioner and drawn in, to the extent and in the way needed for their higher good, by the person receiving the Reiki. Reiki practioners may use additional techniques - for example, certain symbols and mantras communicated at attunement or specially chosen crystals - to assess clients' needs and to intensify and direct the energy flow. Reiki is a holistic therapy (that is, it seeks to achieve overall patient wellbeing - physical, mental, emotional and spiritual - rather than just the relief of specific symptoms) which embraces the maintenance of good health as well as the treatment of particular conditions.

What conditions can be treated by Reiki?

Reiki can bring healing at all levels - physical, emotional, mental and spiritual. Both chronic and acute conditions can benefit from Reiki healing. The treatment requires no effort of will or concentration and often the person receiving Reiki will report that the experience was intensely relaxing.

What is a Reiki treatment like?

The Initial Consultation will involve taking a detailed case history and during the Initial Consultation a Treatment Plan will be suggested and the likely timescale and cost indicated.

A Reiki treatment involves no removal of clothes (though you may be asked to remove watches, spectacles, contact lenses, shoes, belts - anything which may be constricting or interfere with the energy flows) and may be given even without physical contact. The person receiving Reiki will lie on a treatment couch or, if unable to do so, sit in a treatment chair and the treatment proceeds by the practitioner placing his or her hands gently on or just above your body in a sequence of positions which will be held for a period of time. The hand positions cover the front and back of the body and are non-intrusive. There is no massage or manipulation. Sensations during a Reiki treatment vary from person to person and from treatment to treatment and you may consciously feel little or fall asleep. Otherwise, sensations of heat, cold and tingling, for example, are fairly common and occasionally the treatment releases an emotional response.
